We take very seriously the independent tests, and I work a rating system to evaluate each product based on laboratory results.

I identified five main categories: detection, cleaning, protection, false positives, and performance. When there is sufficient laboratory data, we use it to calculate the number of stars in each category, and an overall rating.

As you can see from the chart below, Panda, Kaspersky, Bitdefender and get very good results in general. This is definitely a good sign.

Even independent labs do not have unlimited resources, so there is a paucity of results for certain products. I'll talk about some of the most flexible laboratories on the possibility of extending the collection of products tested.

Hands on testing

Each antivirus review, run a hand over test the product's ability to detect and prevent malware attacks. We also check the ability of each product to detect and prevent malware downloads later.

One source of links London-based MRG-Effitas sift those referring directly to a malicious executable online. The use of links to executable files, it is easy for me to measure success. If a malicious download reached the office, no antivirus. If the file is deleted during the download, or block access to the URL completely successful.

The links we use are never more than a day old, sometimes only a few hours. This means that each product performs a different set of links, but in all cases are very recent. we plug away until I had about 100 links by calculating the daily average differences. It certainly is not in the real world that our standard test block malware, which necessarily uses the same samples as a year.

I've been running test URL blocking for nearly a year, and we found a wide range of results. avast! Free Antivirus 2014 detects 79 percent of more than 100 malicious URLs, blocking access to most of the URL level. Free Panda Antivirus 2015 scored a respectable 64 percent. Kaspersky and BitDefender clearly focus their efforts on other layers of protection; neither are many in this particular test.
